About Shanghai, China

The conference will be held at Shanghai Aircraft Customer Service Corporation, Shanghai, China

Shanghai is situated on the banks of the Yangtza River Delta in Eastern China. It is the largest city in China and the eighth largest city in the world. Shanghai has a population of 18.7 million, including a transient population of 2 million.

Widely regarded as the citadel of China's modern economy, the city also serves as one of the most important cultural, commercial, financial, industrial and communications centers of China. Shanghai also has one of the world's busiest ports, and has become the largest cargo port in the world.

Originally, Shanghai was a seaside fishing village and with time, became China's most prominent city. By the 20th century, Shanghai became the center of popular culture,  intellectual discourse and political intrigue in the Republic of China.

In the late 19th century and early 20th century, Shanghai was considered the largest commercial city in the Far East, and the third largest financial center in the world, ranking after New York City and London.

Modern Shanghai has three key attractions of interest to the visitor, including Sightseeing, Business centers and Shopping malls located in the People's Square and along the Huangpu River. The main Entertainment and Holiday Tourism areas are located at Mt. Sheshan, Chongming Island, Dingshan Lake and Shenshuigang Area.

A wide variety of cuisines can be found in the city. Shanghai offers a plethora of culinary delights focusing on the gourmet traditions of Beijing, Yangzhou, Sichuan and Guangzhou, as well as its own local dishes. Shanghai's restaurants are among the finest to be found in China, and they welcome diners from anywhere at any time.

Shanghai continues to grow and prosper, meeting the aspirations of the 21st century, whilst retaining its proud traditions of service and hospitality. The Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Jinmao Mansion and Pudong International Airport are the modern symbols of an international metropolis, whilst the Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theatre and Shanghai City Planning Exhibition Center are evidence of the extensive and deep passion of a great city that extends a warm welcome to friends from all over the world.

Pudong
Pudong, officially known as Pudong New Area, is a district of Shanghai, China. Since the beginning of its development in 1990 when plans were first announced, Pudong has emerged as China's financial and commercial hub. Pudong is home to the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone and a skyline that includes the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Jin Mao Tower, symbolic of Shanghai and China's economic development.

To travel by taxi in the Pudong area, where all the congress hotels are located, costs approximately 1Euro.

Language
The vernacular language is Shanghainese, a dialect of Wu Chinese; while the official language is Standard Mandarin. The local dialect is mutually unintelligible with Mandarin, and is an inseparable part of the Shanghainese identity. The Shanghainese dialect today is a mixture of standard Wu Chinese as spoken in Suzhou, with the dialects of Ningbo and other nearby regions whose peoples have migrated to Shanghai in large numbers since the 20th Century.
Nearly all Shanghainese under the age of 40 can speak Mandarin fluently. Fluency in foreign languages is unevenly distributed. Most senior residents who received a university education before the revolution, and those who worked in foreign enterprises, can speak English. Those under the age of 26 have had contact with English since primary school, as English is taught as a mandatory course starting at Grade 1.

Attractions
Shanghai, a vigorous and energetic international metro-polis, welcomes people from all over the world to enjoy its special atmosphere. This modern metropolis with its rich heritage of ancient Chinese culture has much to see and do.

The Oriental Pearl TV Tower is the modern symbol of Shanghai City. Standing beside the Huangpu River with a height of 468 meters (1536 feet), it is the tallest TV tower in Asia and the third highest in the world. This unusual structure that dominates the skyline is a great attraction to tourists.

Nanjing Road is considered to be the "No. 1 commercial street in China". Here along its 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles), you will find over 600 shops that on average are visited by some 1.7 million people each day. If you like shopping, do not miss it!

Yuyuan Garden is the largest of Shanghai's ancient gardens with architectural styles of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The garden has six areas, each with its own style. The Grand Rockery, in the center of the Garden, is the most renowned sight here.

Shanghai Museum is a veritable treasure house of ancient Chinese art and houses 120,000 precious relics. Bronzes, pottery, paintings and calligraphies are distinctive features of the Museum's collection. Seen from above, the Museum resembles a large bronze mirror of the Han Dynasty (206BC -220). From the distance, it looks like a bronze Ding, an ancient cooking vessel that contains so many mementos of the 5,000-year-old history of Chinese civilization.

Another sight not be missed is the Bund. Situated on the east bank of theHuangpu River , here, one can enjoy the bracing air and fine sunshine as well as seeing something of the many activities along the river. The new finance and commercial houses cluster together along the south of the Bund while along the west there is a wealth of grand buildings in the European architectural styles of the nineteen-twenties, thirties and early forties. Marshal Chen Yi's statue looks down on the square where lively musicians gather to play and sing bringing pleasure to the many people who stop by to listen. At night bright lights add to the happy atmosphere as people stroll along the wide riverside promenade.

The Jade Buddha Temple is one of the most famous Buddhist temples to be found in Shanghai. The White Jade Buddhas were brought here from Burma in the nineteenth century. One is seated while the other is in the recumbent position of Sakyamuni symbolizing the Buddha's attainment of enlightenment or nirvana. The temple also has some impressive images of the Heavenly Kings. Although many people come to worship each day and burn incense at this very holy and active shrine, visitors are welcome.

The Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China is a typical two-storey brick and timber building of the kind to be seen in Shanghai City. It was here that the founding of the Communist Party of China was announced in 1921. The Former Residence of Sun Yat-sen was once home to the famous Chinese democratic revolutionary and first president of Chinese Kuomintang, Sun Yat-sen and his wife, Song Qingling. The building contains exhibits furniture and personal effects once used by Dr. Sun Yat-sen.

The visitor to Shanghai having marveled at the city's modern architecture and historical sites will be further rewarded when going to see neighboring water towns like Zhujiajiao and Qibao Ancient Town. Here is another world where ancient houses huddle by the rivers running through the towns that with their flagstone-paved roads and typical local flavors will be sure to slow your pace as you savor their traditions

Dining
As the locals in Shanghai put it, "Blessed are those born in Shanghai as they have the most chances to taste delicious food.' Shanghai Cuisine is not one of the Eight Major Cuisines of China but is a choice blend of the most appealing aspects of these other national styles of food while being always ready to adopt the best aspects of foreign cuisine and make them its own. Therefore, it may be safely said that you can enjoy all the best food from home and abroad when in Shanghai.

Ben Bang Cuisine. This literally means 'local' and makes great use of fresh fish. Ben Bang differs from Canton cuisine which also makes use of fresh sea food in as much as the Shanghai dish has a strong flavor and the bright color of soya bean sauce. Xiang You Shan Hu (this dish is so named as it crackles when the hot oil is poured onto eel.) and Ba Bao La Jiang (Eight Auspicious Pepper Sauce) are the two most typical dishes. The Eight Auspicious Pepper Sauce is not a dressing but a dish comprising shrimp, peanuts, pork, bamboo shoot, chicken, tripe, and sauce. This dish gives us some idea of how delicate Shanghai cuisine can be.

If you are on a tight timetable, fast food chain restaurants are to be found all over Shanghai. These offer quality food at very reasonable prices. For Chinese fast food, you can choose from Sun Ya Da Bao (Big Steamed Stuffed Bun), Yong He Dou Jiang (Soy Bean Milk), Feng Yu Sheng Jian (Fried Stuffed Bun), Yu Yue Ren Jia, Jin Shi Fu Won Ton, Da Niang Dumpling, Zhen Ding Chicken, and more. Western fast food outlets like KFC and McDonald's well established in Shanghai while Pizza Hut is rather les popular due to its higher prices, never-the-less it is as you would expect to find elsewhere in the world.

Sichuan Cuisine and Cantonese Cuisine were more fashionable here years ago but the former is too hot and does not appeal to the local's taste while the latter is considered expensive; consequently Benbang Dishes are regaining popularity again. Since you are in Shanghai, why not do as the local does? Try the snacks and Benbang that way you can enjoy your time in Shanghai to the full!

Night Life

Night life in Shanghai is gentle and colorful because life here is much more than life itself. It is elegant.

The scenery at night has to be seen and the Bund is a must. The ornate classical and modern buildings take on a new and exciting look as they are lit up by an abundance of colored lights. Looking across the Huangpu River to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Jinmao Tower is a magical sight. A night-time Huangpu River cruise presents a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the night life on the Bund.. 30 or so boats carry tourists; These include deluxe boats, ancient dragon boats of Ming and Qing styles, boats of Shikumen style of old Shanghai, Pirate Boat, etc. The boat fare is CNY 68. Whatever kind of boat you take, the view to be seen here at night will be sure to live on in your memory for years to come.

Leaving the scenery aside, walking westward along Nanjing East Road, you will quickly reach the famous Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, the gaily illuminated shops are an exciting backdrop to the cheerful crowds that come here after dark to enjoy the carefree atmosphere, where it is possible to pick up a bargain or enjoy a tasty morsel to eat.

Subway line 1 links Shanghai's three main shopping areas: Nanjing Road, Huanhai Road and Xujiahui. Something that is most convenient for those who like their shopping expeditions! Most of the shops will close at 10 pm but that is when the tea houses and bars really come into their own and the night is still young!

Tea Houses open 24 hours a day. Apart from enjoying a lone taste of tea, you can invite several friends and play cards or just chat. Once you are here, you can experience all this for yourself. Fashionable entertainments are favorites with young people. When night falls, Shanghai bathes in the light of various entertainment venues. Nightclubs, Karaoke, discos, bars and coffee houses are all popular night time meeting places.

Shanghai Xin Tian Di has many visitors. If you are visiting Shanghai for the first time, it is much safer to go Xin Tian Di for the night life. Xin Tian Di, the most fashionable area cultivated in the distinctive Shikumen Buildings, the architectural styles of both west and east from the 1920s and 1930s Shanghai around South Huangpi Road and Xingye Road, has become the popular place to go. Every building has a modern interior and has become an international gallery, fashion shop, themed restaurant, coffee house or bar. Bars are where young white collars discuss their work or talk about life; even hard questions on the desk get solved here! Open-air bars are popular here also. Xin Tian Di offers the most choice and favorable appreciation. The arrival of more and more boutiques, designer shops and luxury goods stores continually adds to the enjoyment of Xin Tian Di.

Maoming South Road: An upwardly mobile bar street.

This is where the foreign guests like to stay. The old but noted bars like Judystoo are still popular with visitors. Newly-opened Babyface's business is booming. The Colors and Face clubs inside the Ruijin Hotel in the street add their own touch of splendor to this road.

Fuxing Park, located at No. 2, Haolan Road, Shanghai, is the only well-preserved French park in China, so people also call it "France Garden". Altogether there are three clubs here. They are Park97Guandi and Cash Box.

Among them, Park97 is where veterans spend their nights through. Three popular food and entertainment grounds, Baci Restaurant of Italian cuisine, Tokio Joe Restaurant with its Japanese cuisine and the California Club from Hong Kong Lan Kwai Fong make up Park97. Compared with that in Xin Tian Di, nightlife here is not that showy but exudes an everlasting glamour. With elegance, exoticism, top-rank wine and music, Park97 has its special charm. Guandi, the most noted club here, is the first superior club opened in China after Taibei's. Cash Box (Qian Gui) as Shanghai's oldest, most renowned KTV has the largest scale.
